Elements of Design

Today we are going to download and make a contact sheet of your elements of design photo explorations from last class' field trip. I will review how to do this for you. Title each image with the element you photographed (if you have more than one of each element, you will have to number them). You should have at least one example of each element: line, shape, form, texture, colour/contrast and a few combinations.

Save your contact sheet to the class sharing site and then post your top 5 Elements photos to your blog. If you have time,you can upload your selfie and take a few moments to personalize your blog.

Also save your top 5 to the share for a class slide show after for a class critique, make sure to label with your name and the element.

Welcome to the Digital Photography 11/12 blog. This blog will be updated regularly to keep Digital Photography students up to date of classroom activities, events, instructions, and assignments. Check it regularly.


We are going to begin by sharing images from your extended summer taken from camera phones, APs, social media, and Instagram.

Either hashtag your image #lfasdphotoclass14 make sure your first name is noted somewhere in your image comment or title.
Or email your photo to yourself and put it on the school sharing site.  We will be sharing these next class.

HOMEWORK
Select an image from your extended summer to share, bring it or hash tag it before next class.
Take a creative "Selfie". Include a background that describes something about you for Friday.

• **Camera- Digital SLR (recommended/optional).
• 8 GB SD card/Camera memory card (recommended for students who not have a DSLR).
• 4- 8 GB Jump/Flash Drive.

**Cameras are optional. Cameras are available for loan for during class or overnight. In class loans must be returned before the end of class. Overnight loans must be returned 1st thing next day- if you know you will be missing school the next day, please inform the teacher. You are responsible for replacing any lost or stolen equipment.

All images have a similar theme
Cover with a title and your name (cover can be the same image as one in book).

Photograph a basic topic (i.e. flowers) and compile a series of 8 (or more) photos in a book. Each image should have a strong composition and be able to stand on its own, but share a common thread. The book should be no more than 5 x 7 in size (unless you have it published) and must have a cover that reflects the contents of the book with a title and your name. Each image should be framed in a consistent and unique way that showcases your series effectively. You must take at least two "rolls" (min. 20 images each) or engage in 2+ shoots to construct your series and submit at least 2 contact sheets of your idea development. You can also further develop your ideas from you "Photographer" Project.

Photoshop Assignment ala Darkroom Effects

Select an image from the Portrait project to work with. Each time you try one of the following experiments, save the image "SAVE AS" so that you preserve the previous version. Gather them in one file, then paste the file in the Photo 11/12E Share folder, paste/post best one into you journal.

1. Touch-up the Photo- Correct the contrast and exposure: Image>Adjustments>Levels (or Exposure). Try the spot healing brush or band-aid.
2. Double Exposure- try selecting an area with the ""Lasso tool or the "Square Marquee" from the same or another image and Copy>Paste. You can use the Eraser to touch up. OR Try the Rubber Stamp Tool.
3. Dodge and Burn- either use the Burn Tool to darken a light area, or use the Dodge Tool to lighten a dark area. Or try a vignette where you use the Elliptical Marquee tool to select the area to select the area around the image Select>Inverse (To Feather the edge type a # in the option bar at the top), then try burning the edges with a Burn Tool or Image>Adjust>Levels.
4. Contact Negative- Image>Adjustments>Invert. Try Levels to enhance.
5. Solarize- Filter> Render>Solarize. Again you could adjust the darkness and contrast with Levels.
6. An Experiment- ...? Your choice, play around!
7. Selective Colour- Using Adjustment layers and masking techniques.
8. Try 3 Combinations of Filters and Image Adustments.

The Year in Pictures 2013

It's a tradition. Each year, when we return from Winter Break, we welcome the New Year with a reflection of photos from the past year.
Pick your top 3 favorite photos from MSNBC and/or Reuters, one from each of the following:

• your favorite news story (serious)
• a fun one,
• a strong composition.

Describe the event/story (in your own words), and explain why you chose it. Post the image with each response to your journal/blog.
